Schirnhofer is an Austrian meat and sausage manufacturer. The headquarters of the Schirnhofer Familien Holding is in Kaindorf in Styria.

The Schirnhofer Group achieved a turnover of 108 million euros in 2008 with around 1,500 employees.

Schirnhofer is known for the Schirnhofer brand itself. From 1997 to 2014, the company operated around 245 branches of the Zielpunkt supermarket chain under this name as shop-in-shop .

In addition to exports to Georgia and Germany, the shipping company Crystal Cruises is also supplied on its cruise ships.

Company history

The company was founded in Kaindorf in 1926 as a butcher's business by Josef Schirnhofer, whose wife ran the business until after the Second World War . His son Karl Schirnhofer ran the cattle and meat trade from 1957 and took over the company in 1966. Under his leadership, the butcher shop became a large-scale business. Schirnhofer GmbH was founded in 1978, and in 1981 the Tödtling butcher's shop was converted into a slaughterhouse and cutting plant.

In 1981 Karl Schirnhofer jun. into the company. In 1990 and 1991, a new facility was built outside of Kaindorf. In 1992 Karl Schirnhofer jun. the parental company. Schirnhofer has been working with Zielpunkt since 1997 .

In 1999 , the Prettenhofer slaughterhouse in Großsteinbach , also in Styria, was taken over, which according to its own statements is one of the most hygienic and animal-friendly slaughterhouses in Austria.

In 2008 Schirnhofer took a stake in Aibler Fleisch- und Wurstwaren Produktions GmbH in Oberwaltersdorf and in W. Blasko Convenience Fertiggerichte GmbH in Bruck an der Mur . Weiss Fleischveredelung GmbH in Leoben was completely taken over . The Schirnhofer Familien Unternehmens Holding GmbH was founded for better management of the investments .

In 2011 Karl Schirnhofer moved to the Supervisory Board. In 2014 Karl Schirnhofer took over the operational management again.

At the end of November, the company announced that it would also have to file for bankruptcy due to the target point bankruptcy. On December 1, 2015, he registered a restructuring procedure without self-administration in Graz .

The Zielpunkt bankruptcy not only affects the current 70 employees at Schirnhofer itself, but also about 800 employees who were taken over by Zielpunkt. It also has a direct impact on numerous suppliers; the farmers who supplied under the ALMO brand stopped slaughtering.

At the end of January, the trustee announced that the company would be continued for the time being. On February 11, 2016, around 50 creditors, with around € 25 million in liabilities, accepted the restructuring plan with a payment rate of 30%, so that operations (without self-administration) will continue. Of the previous 270 employees, 200 and 30 temporary workers will continue to be employed.
