US bomber crash in 1943
On October 1, 1943, an American B-24 Liberator bomber crashed near Heilbrunn after an aerial battle over the Wiener Neustädter Flugzeugwerke . The machine with the serial number 41-23711 was piloted by William F. Stein, who was killed together with eight men of his crew in the crash. The only survivor was the navigator William W. Sykes, who was then taken prisoner for 19 months. The fallen Americans were first buried in the village cemetery and transferred to the United States in March 1950, where they found their final resting place in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis .
Today there is a memorial stone in German and English on a hiking trail near the crash site.
