The Austrian Climate Protection Prize is an award that has been given annually since 2008 by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) and the ORF in order to further advance climate protection as an economic factor and to honor the best ideas for climate protection. ORF General Director Alexander Wrabetz and Environment Minister Andrä Rupprechter award the winners with the Climate Protection Prize statuette. The award ceremony was moderated by Claudia Reiterer from 2008 to 2016 , and in 2017 Christa Kummer took over the moderation .

Until 2007, a climate protection prize was awarded by the Austrian hail insurance company.

Four categories

  • The companies category is aimed at individual, small and medium-sized companies that take comprehensive measures to save energy and use renewable energies .
  • Private individuals, initiatives or associations as well as representatives from the arts and culture can submit their innovative and creative projects in the Daily Life category .
  • Particularly pioneering initiatives and projects at community, district and regional level can be included in the Communities & Regions category .
  • In the Agriculture category , agricultural and forestry businesses - from family farms to associations - are invited to submit climate protection projects and campaigns.

Selection of the award winners

The expert jury consists of representatives from the BMLFUW, the ORF, science, an NGO , a federal state and a previous year's winner and is supported by experts from the climate protection initiative klimaaktiv . It nominates the 16 best projects for the Austrian Climate Protection Award, which are presented in the ORF program today and on the Climate Protection Award website. For each of the four categories there is then a public vote, online, by phone and on the klimaaktiv Facebook page. The highest number of points from the jury and viewer evaluation is decisive for the selection of the award winners.
