On the other hand, the relevance criteria with regard to size, importance and degree of general interest of articles are formulated less strictly. Evaluative statements by the authors are also tolerated within certain limits. FürthWiki , for example, also sees its point in the fact that, as a regional city wiki, it can go into more detail than Wikipedia on location-related topics .

Structure, technology, licenses

The surface is emphatically sober and functional. The design of many Regiowikis is similar to that of Wikipedia , because:

  • there are also increasing cross-references between the encyclopedias,
  • some of the authors are also active in Wikipedia ,
  • the vast number of platforms on the Wiki - hypertext system MediaWiki based.

In terms of licenses, Creative Commons licenses are generally used for the texts , although on the one hand a completely free license, as used in Wikipedia, on the other hand, many of them have the addition NC for non-commercial in their license and thus lead to Wikipedia are not compatible. Some also have the addition ND for No derivatives in their license.

Due to the high proportion of voluntary work, personnel costs are low in most cases, but are incurred at regular intervals for repairs and maintenance. Competition and potential for regional newspapers

Regiowikis could become competitors for local newspapers because they too provide up-to-date information, for example send representatives to press conferences and report on them, or list event tips. Regiowikis are also a potential for the local newspaper, which could thus make its online offer more diverse. Quality problems

The example of the Munich Wiki makes it clear that content often does not meet the quality criteria of Wikipedia. This occurs when the initiators and administrators of a regional wiki are no longer active. Basic rules are then no longer followed and authors' misconduct is no longer sanctioned. This leads to vandalism, edit war, personal attacks, copyright violations, missing sources, poor layout, missing wikification, poor writing style and a lack of quality assurance. Since third parties cannot access the activation of administrator rights, such a wiki is doomed to die in the medium term. The low quality also has a negative impact on the image of Wikipedia itself.

Regional wikis

German-speaking area

Since the 2000s, around 50  cities , regions or regional centers have formed Regiowikis in Germany alone . Probably the first German-language StadtWiki was founded in November 2003 in Kiel as KielWiki. Increasingly, users are also seeing a reference work in Regiowiki to quickly find out about authorities, shopping opportunities, excursion destinations or events that affect the region or city, for example.

According to its own information, the City of Vienna operates the Vienna History Wiki, the largest Regiowiki in the world, with a total of almost 40,000 articles.

As part of the IV. StadtWiki-Tage from 20 & 21 July 2018 in Fürth , the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main presented a study on how do regional wikis tick? in front. The Goethe University has had the Regiowikis as a research area for a long time and gave an insight into the methods and analysis options of local and regional wikis. Essentially, the following results have been observed so far:

  • The first Regiowikis started in 2003.
  • Regiowikis can be divided into classes of different editing activities over their lifespan.
  • A small number of authors do most of the editing.
  • After a short period of time, wikis achieve characteristic distributions and networks of topics.

The first Regiowikis are already "disappearing" or are offline. The following Regiowikis have gone offline since 2017: FrankenWiki, Sachsen-Anhalt-Wiki and Rhein-Main-Wiki.
