Makoto Satō (theater director)

Makato Satō ( Japanese 佐藤 信 , Satō Makato ; born August 23, 1943 in Tokyo Prefecture ) is a Japanese theater director and playwright.

Satō comes from the underground theater movement ( angura , short for andāguraundo = underground ) of the 1960s and was formative for the formation of the Gekidan Kuro Tent ( 劇 団 黒 テ ン ト , English Black Tent Theater ) in Tokyo. He had success with pieces influenced by Brecht such as Ismene (1966), My Beatles (1967), Nezumi Kozō (1969) and The Dance of Angels Who Burn their Own Wings (1970 based on Peter Weiss ' Marat / Sade ). Since the 1970s he has been touring Japan with his troupe and has participated in projects by other left-wing theater groups such as Journey to the West (1980) of the Philippine Educational Theater Association . In addition to his own works and works by Brecht, he also performed dramas by avant-garde Japanese authors such as Kara Jūrō and Terayama Shūji . In Avignon in 1995 he directed a performance of Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck .
