The FürthWiki is a regional online reference work for the city of Fürth and currently contains over 9,000 content pages / articles or 18,699 pages. It was brought into being on February 7th, 2007 by Felix Geismann and Mark Muzenhardt, because, in their opinion, neither an up-to-date city dictionary exists in Fürth nor a sufficient city chronicle.

content

The FürthWiki contains information on all topics related to Fürth, which is accordingly the central relevance criterion. The FürthWiki also sees its point in the fact that, as a regional city wiki, it can go into more detail on location-related topics than Wikipedia , and accordingly the relevance criteria are less strict.

history

The reason for the foundation was on the one hand the concept of Wikipedia as a hypertext system, which had already proven itself in 2007, as well as the conviction that there is no up-to-date city dictionary in Fürth and the city chronicle is de facto no longer kept:

“Around the turn of the century, citizens close to her hometown of Fürth, such as Dr. Fronmüller or later Paul Käppner books with details from life in the Kleeblattstadt. These volumes were then available as free supplements to the daily newspaper or in the archive. Later it was the job of an employee of the city archives to collect relevant articles, later only to type in newspaper articles, and finally to stick in newspaper articles. In the time when it was addicted to savings, the entire position was ultimately cut and an ABM force was entrusted with the continuation of this chronicle. "

In the summer of 2008, the FürthWiki comprised almost 800 articles; by the fifth anniversary in 2012, almost 3,000 articles had been reached.

On June 27, 2012, a sponsoring association called FürthWiki - Association for Free Knowledge and City History was founded. Purpose of FürthWiki e. V., according to the association's statutes, is "to research and document the history and culture of the city of Fürth and to preserve remaining unique cultural values, to preserve and convey historical knowledge" and "to promote the freedom of knowledge". In order to achieve the goals, above all "the further development and maintenance of a free internet encyclopedia ('FürthWiki'), which is accessible to users free of charge, as well as an association website should be pursued in order to make knowledge freely available online".

financing

At the time, the costs for the server were borne exclusively by the two founders, refinancing took place via the advertising banners. FürthWiki ran on the server of the Fürth association "Treu Färdd!" (High German: "Treu Fürth!"), Founded in 2005 primarily to support the SpVgg Fürth . The newly founded sponsoring association has been taking on the financing since July 2012.

Technology and administration

The design of the FürthWiki is similar to Wikipedia, as both platforms are based on the Wiki - Hypertext - System MediaWiki . In addition, RegionalWiki has been using Semantic MediaWiki to manage its content for several years . There are also increasing cross-references between the two encyclopedias, and some of the staff at FürthWiki are also active on Wikipedia. The number of active employees is around 20 people. All relevant topics and content are discussed and discussed together in monthly working sessions. In addition, the FürthWiki team offers regular editing training in cooperation with the VHS-Fürth. There is a written cooperation with the local museum and city archive as well as the constructive cooperation and content exchange with the local history associations. The sponsoring association regularly informs all authors and interested parties about the latest innovations and interesting content via its own blog.

Fürthwiki store

In 2018, RegionalWiki submitted an application for funding to Wikimedia Germany (WDME) for a so-called local community room in Fürth for the first time. The funding application contained two dimensions: 1) the actual first funding of an independent regional wiki as a local space, in contrast to the already existing classic Wikipedia community spaces , such as B. in Hanover or Cologne, which have their main activity in the "big sister" Wikipedia. 2) The attempt to link RegionalWikis to Wikipedia in a technically and structurally structured way in order to get synergy effects for both sides. The last point could become a blueprint for other RegionalWikis, according to the idea. The commitment was made in the same year, but the search for a room was initially more difficult than expected and the COVID-19 pandemic initially thwarted the project. The FürthWiki store has existed since August 2020 and is currently (as of 2020) the sixth local room that is supported by the WDME.
