The Sonnenwelt Großschönau is an adventure exhibition on the subject of "People & Energy". The exhibition deals with the subjects of energy , sustainability and energy saving . It is one of the five “energy experiences” from Großschönau .

history

The hall in which the exhibition is located was built in 2011. On November 16, 2011, the research and competence center for building and energy was opened in Großschönau in the Waldviertel. From January 1st, 2011 work was done on the world of the sun. The idea behind it was to sensitize people to the subject of building, living and living in harmony with nature.

The Sonnenwelt was opened in May 2013 - the planning phase began earlier when Josef Bruckner and Mayor Martin Bruckner had the idea of an energy experience exhibition. The conception and construction phase lasted from 2011 to 2013. The conception of the world of the sun was carried out together with an exhibition design team. Employees of the Vienna University of Technology, museum curators, museum educators, exhibition architects and exhibition graphic artists played a key role in the design of the exhibition. The exhibition opened in May 2013.

Content

The exhibition offers a 2,000 m² course and is divided into 12 "time zones":

  • After a 10-minute introductory film that sets the tone for the topics of sustainability, energy and climate protection, Zone 1, “Of Sun and Earth”, is about the interplay between sun, atmosphere and earth.
  • The “Building Nests” zone deals with the origins of mankind when people were still nomads .
  • The fading last ice age, which motivated people to look for a permanent living space, is the subject of the zone “settling down”.
  • In zone 4 "In the realm of the pyramids" the ancient Egyptians are housed with information about pyramids, obelisks, the special features of the Nile and their discoveries and inventions.
  • In zone 5 “As a guest in ancient Rome” there is an insight into the life of the Romans . With a stepping crane and a pulley system you can find out how materials were transported from A to B back then - without fossil energy.
  • The “At the craftsman” zone is dedicated to the time around 1700 and various trades at the time.
  • Zone 7 "house and yard" deals with country life.
  • The theme of the "Salon with gas light" zone is the differences in the life of servants and the rulers around 1900.
  • The 1960s and 70s were characterized by brisk construction activity. In particular, many single-family houses were built. How and why these were built is explained in zone 9 “On the construction site”.
  • Unlimited growth or merciless waste? This question will be investigated in Zone 10. The main topic in “Limits to Growth” is the energy crisis of the 1970s.
  • The “All about Passive House” zone deals with elements of the passive house. These elements are presented here using ten commandments.
  • In zone 12 “Future with Sun”, various visions of what the future could look like are dealt with.

Special exhibitions

  • “The hungry planet”: Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio presented a worldwide photo study of families and showed what these people eat and drink within a week. 18 of these families were presented in the first special exhibition “The Hungry Planet”.
  • “Renewable energies”: Since 2017, various stations have shown how renewable energies - such as wind and water power, solar energy and biomass - can be generated and used.
