The company Sonnentor is an Austrian company with headquarters in Sprögnitz (municipality Großgöttfritz ), which in the manufacture and marketing of herbs, teas and spices from organic farming is specialized.

history

The company was founded in 1988 by Johannes Gutmann. At the beginning of the 1990s, Sonnentor was one of the first companies to communicate the marketing of organic products through values such as "joie de vivre" and "enjoyment". The breakthrough came with a redesign of the packaging design by Peter Schmid. In the following years he remained an important figure in the development of the company.

With a market share of around 50%, Sonnentor was the Austrian market leader in the organic specialist trade with herbs, tea and spices in 2010 and was third in this product group in Germany in the same year. In the 2015/2016 financial year, Sonnentor generated sales of 35.9 million euros with around 300 employees. Around 65% of the products are exported . In addition to its headquarters in Sprögnitz, Lower Austria, the company also has a network of franchise partners and a branch in the Czech Republic . In 2015, the company will be supplied by around 210 organic herb farmers from the region, who cultivate around 550 hectares.

As of 2018, there were further cultivation areas and cooperations with organic farmers in Albania , Bulgaria , China (tea), Greece , Kosovo , Nicaragua (coffee), Portugal , Romania , Serbia , Spain and Tanzania (pepper, cloves, lemongrass, cardamom).

From 2007, the EAN code on Sonnentor products was "suppressed" by printing a horizontal line that crossed the vertical lines. This practice was discontinued in 2013 after the press reported it.

Since 2013, Sonnentor has published the free magazine Freude every six months , in which unusual people and projects are presented that are not in the spotlight.
