Johann Peter Bruggisser

Johann Peter Bruggisser (born July 26, 1806 in Wohlen ; † January 8, 1870 there ; entitled to live in Wohlen) was a liberal Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 to 1866 he represented the Canton of Aargau in the National Council .

biography

The son of the factory owner Martin Bruggisser, who was one of the most important straw braid industrialists in Switzerland, studied law at the universities of Munich , Heidelberg , Freiburg im Breisgau and Göttingen . In Munich he became a member of the Corps Helvetia. In Göttingen he also became active in the Corps Helvetia there in 1828. He then worked as a lawyer and took over the father's company together with his four brothers. After the Freiämtersturm of 1830 Bruggisser belonged to the Constitutional Council, which drafted a new, more liberal canton constitution. He was also involved in the constitutional revisions of 1840 and 1851. In the military he had the rank of colonel on the judicial staff.

From 1831 to 1840 Bruggisser worked as President of the District Court in Bremgarten , also in 1831 he was elected to the Grand Council , to which he belonged continuously until 1858. He played a key role in the creation of the Aargau civil procedure law and civil law. In 1845 he represented the canton of Aargau as an envoy at the federal assembly . In 1847, as federal commissioner, he tried to persuade the canton of Nidwalden to leave the Sonderbund , but was unsuccessful.

After the founding of the Swiss federal state in 1848, Bruggisser successfully ran in the first parliamentary elections . He was a member of the National Council until 1866. At first he was a supporter of liberal radicalism , but increasingly moderated himself and represented economically liberal positions. From 1849 to 1851 and from 1858 to 1867 he worked full-time as a judge at the Aargau Higher Court. In 1866 he resigned as a national councilor.

His son was the Aargau National Councilor Anton Bruggisser .
