history

The first white settlers came to the area around today's Sycamore in 1835. The original city was laid out by a New Yorker named Christian Sharer . A mill was built and the Kishwaukee River diked. However, the settlement did not develop and the settlement focus shifted to the other bank of the river. In 1837 Orange (the former name of Sycamore) became the county seat.

The present city was laid out in 1837 by James Waterman and Evans Wharry . The first settler in the area of today's city was Carlos Lattin , who had already settled in 1835. Lattin staked out a claim that covered most of the western part of today's city. He built the first house a little north of what is now downtown.

In 1839 the first courthouse was built in Sycamore. At the same time, the city's first hotel was built. A year later, the settlement comprised 12 buildings, the number of which increased to 18 by 1844. The population of Sycamore grew continuously from 262 in 1848 to 320 in 1849. In 1850 there were 390, in 1851 it was 435.

In the late 1850s, Sycamore was connected to the railway network and a station building was built. In 1855 there were 41 businesses in Sycamore. In 1858 Sycamore was raised to a municipality ( "Village" ). In the course of the civil war, the railroad helped the city to grow continuously, which led to Sycamore being given the status of "City" in 1869.

In 1903, when the construction of a new courthouse was under discussion, the Sycamore location was again called into question. The neighboring town of DeKalb tried to take over the seat of the county government and wealthy DeKalb citizens offered $ 20,000 for the construction of new administrative buildings. The City of Sycamore also raised its own money for it and after a series of complicated negotiations and litigation, Sycamore retained the status of an administrative center for DeKalb County. In 1904 the new marble courthouse was completed.

During this time, a number of two-story buildings were also erected along the main streets in the city center. A bank, a cinema and today's Midwestern Museum of Natural History were built .

On Wednesday, February 10, 2010, Sycamore was hit by an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale . A number of buildings were damaged. This was the first earthquake in northern Illinois since 1999.
