history

As the oldest predecessor organization, the Association of Industrialists , the representation of large and heavy industry , was established in 1862 . In 1892 the Central Association of Austrian Industrialists was set up to represent individual professional associations, and a little later, in 1897, the Federation of Austrian Industrialists was established to represent small and medium-sized enterprises. These three associations had the House of Industry built on Schwarzenbergplatz in 1906-09 , which later became the headquarters of the Federation of Industrialists. After the disintegration of Austria-Hungary, they merged to form the Reich Association of Austrian Industry , later the Main Association of Austria's Industry . The Federation of Austrian Industrialists , which was founded during the time of the corporate state , was disbanded after the annexation to Hitler's Germany .

In 1946 it was re-established as an association of Austrian industrialists . After the House of Industry survived World War II without major damage, it became the seat of the Allied Council until 1955 . Since the withdrawal of the Allies, the building has again been the seat of the Federation of Industrialists. On May 23, 1996, the association's name was last changed to the Association of Austrian Industry .

criticism

Because of payments to the Association for the Promotion of the New Economy and the resulting scandal about the financing of the website of the then Finance Minister Karl-Heinz Grasser , the Federation of Industrialists was criticized by opposition politicians, among others, and the suspicion of bribery was expressed. As early as 1993, the publicist Markus Wilhelm uncovered payments by the Federation of Industrialists to various political groups (ÖVP, FPÖ and others).
