Markus Beyrer

Markus J. Beyrer (born August 19, 1965 in St. Pölten , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian lobbyist and general director of the Brussels-based lobbying association Businesseurope . From 2000 to 2002 he was economic policy advisor to the black and blue federal government under Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel , then Secretary General of the Austrian Federation of Industrialists (2004–2011).

Life

education

Markus Beyrer studied commercial science at the Vienna University of Economics and Law and law at the University of Vienna . He completed the latter with a Magister juris. In addition, he completed the European Commission's Concours , the postgraduate university course in European law at Danube University Krems, and took part in the Stanford Executive Program of the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University .

Political activities

Beyrer's political career began in 1994 as an attaché for industrial and trade affairs in the permanent representation of Austria to the European Union, of which he was a member until 1996. He then worked in the environmental policy department of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce until 1999 . In 1999 he moved to the government and became an economic policy advisor to Wolfgang Schüssel, then Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Austria. He held this position when Schüssel became Chancellor of Austria's first black-blue coalition. During his consulting time, privatizations , including those of Telekom Austria and Austria Tabak , were pushed. Beyrer testified in the investigative committee of the Austrian parliament about the scandals of the privatization of Telekom Austria (see controversy ). Private

Markus Beyrer grew up in Krems, Lower Austria. He is married and has two children. Friends describe him as "very ambitious". He was a member of the SV Schwarz-Blau tennis club and is a member of the Krems ski club. He is a passionate glider pilot. During his studies he worked as a water ski instructor in the summer.

Political positions

Beyrer's area of ​​activity is primarily energy issues. He is considered one of the most influential nuclear lobbyists in Brussels and is in favor of fracking . He caused a stir with a letter to Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny ahead of an EU summit in 2012, in which he described renewable energies and trading in climate-damaging carbon dioxide certificates as price drivers and criticized the EU's climate targets as too high.

As an employer representative, he is in favor of the abolition of the hackers' regulation , an alignment of the retirement age for women and the increase of the retirement age for pensions to 67, as well as for access restrictions to universities and for tuition fees.

controversy

Markus Beyrer is a passionate hunter. As such, he had to justify himself in a parliamentary committee of inquiry into the Telekom affair , in which he took part, as ÖIAG boss , in hunting trips paid for by Telekom Austria and organized by lobbyist Alfons Mensdorff-Pouilly , including to Scotland according to own information, however, can not remember. He was also accused of having passed on funds from companies to the ÖVP during his time as General Secretary of the Federation of Industrialists. His job change a few months later to the industry interest group Businesseurope was interpreted as an "escape to Brussels".
