Coordinates: 47 ° 6 '  N , 15 ° 30'  O The means Steiermark , Slovenian Srednja Štajerska , nowadays East and West Steiermark or Eastern, Western and Südsteiermark , is the largely undulating central portion of the historical Steiermark which - in contrast zur Obersteiermark -includesthe southern part of today's Austrian state of Styria .

To the subject

The term has been used widely since the 19th century. Until then, the areas of Central Styria were counted as Lower Styria. The conception of which area should be understood as Lower Styria (or styria inferior ) changed in the 19th century. Until the first half of the 19th century, the area south of the line Gleinalm - Frohnleiten - Fischbacher Alpen - Alpl - Pfaffen (-sattel) , thus also western and eastern Styria , was seen in literature as Lower Styria . The Graz district was represented as the northern part of Lower Styria. To the north of it, the Brucker (and Judenburger ) district formed Upper Styria. Central Styria was not shown. Grazer, Marburger and Cillier districts were regarded as Lower Styria. In the middle of the 19th century the term Mittel-Steiermark appeared in official official documents and Lower Styria was restricted to parts of the Marburger Kreis and the Cillier Kreis.

When Lower Styria was lost after the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy (and the end of the old Duchy of Styria ), the term “means” increasingly lost its meaning. Today the region is generally summarized as East and West Styria or East, West and South Styria .

area

In the north, Central Styria is bounded by the Stubalpe , Gleinalpe , Hochalpe and Fischbacher Alps to form Upper Styria . In the south, Possruck , the northernmost part of the Windischen Bühel and the Mur form the border with Lower Styria , which today belongs to Slovenia . The Übermur area ( Slovenian Prekmurje ), which is also Slovenian today , did not historically belong to Styria, so that the Kutschenitza ( Slovenian Kučnica ), the Grenzbach in the so-called Radkersburger Winkel ( Slovenian Radgonski kot ), is not part of the border between Central and Lower Styria.

Central Styria is further subdivided into West Central and East Central Styria, which today are generally only briefly referred to as West and East Styria. The Mur, which runs essentially from north to south in Central Styria, forms the border between East and West Styria. In terms of regional planning, one divides in more detail into East , Southwest Styria , Southeast Styria and Central Styria , officially statistically (NUTS regions) into East Styria and West and South Styria .

Central Styria includes the districts Deutschlandsberg , Hartberg-Fürstenfeld , Graz-Umgebung , Leibnitz , Südoststeiermark , Voitsberg and Weiz as well as the city of Graz . The provincial capital Graz is the largest city as well as the economic and cultural center.
