The two districts represent a spatial planning region of Styria. They are located south and south-west of Graz and largely west of the Mur and can therefore be counted as part of southern Styria as well as western Styria . Statistically, they fall into the NUTS region West and South Styria (AT225), which, in addition to these two districts, also includes the northern Voitsberg district.
In terms of landscape, the region includes the Leibnitzer Feld (parts of the Murtal ), Laßnitztal and Sulmtal , the southern parts of the West Styrian hill country (Riedelland) , with the Sausal , the Styrian parts of the Windischen Bühel , the eastern roof of the Koralpe and the northern flank of the Poßruck .
The region has 1736.4 km² cadastral area , including 796 km² permanent settlement area , and 168,792 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020, territorial status: 2020) . 53% of the total area is permanent settlement area (after southeast Styria the second highest value of all Styrian regions), the population density is 97 people / km² (Styria 76, Austria 106), in permanent settlement area 174 people / km² (Styria 233, Austria 259) .
Regional centers are the two district capitals Leibnitz ( 12,437 Ew.) And Deutschlandsberg ( 11,663 Ew.). The following are important as subregional supply centers: Arnfels , Bad Schwanberg , Ehrenhausen an der Weinstrasse , Eibiswald , Gamlitz , Gleinstätten , Gralla , Groß Sankt Florian , Heiligenkreuz am Waasen , Lannach , Lebring-Sankt Margarethen , Leutschach an der Weinstrasse , Pölfing-Brunn , Preding , Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing , Schwarzautal , Stainz , Straß in Steiermark , Wagna , Wies and Wildon .
