The municipality was not affected by the structural reform in Styria , which reduced the number of municipalities in the Deutschlandsberg district from 40 to 15 by 2015, and there were no plans to merge them with other municipalities. However, within the framework of this reform, requests were made to join part of the area to the Stainztal community instead of the Stainz community in accordance with the parish of Preding.

history

During the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648) there was a kind of consortium of wagoners in Preding that transported goods required by the imperial army. The hauliers involved made trips far into the area of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation .

On January 1, 1928, the communities of Preding and Tobis were separated from the Wildon district council and assigned to the Deutschlandsberg district council. This did not concern a change in the district administration, but only a reclassification in the organization of the representation of interests at the community level, for which the district representations formed an administrative level between the communities and the state parliament.

During the National Socialist July coup in 1934, the market was completely ruled by the National Socialists. Its leader, the teacher Kurt Chibidziura, who lives in Mettersdorf, ordered the houses of the market to be flagged on behalf of the new National Socialist Austrian government. The National Socialist "seizure of power" was particularly brutal and bloody in the market. Two gendarmes who tried to prevent the occupation of the post office on the afternoon of July 25 were shot and seriously injured by Chibidziura. On the evening of the same day the 66-year-old owner suffered vulgo "Huterer" a fatal injury by a bullet that had been given to her bedroom window. The National Socialists, whose strength was stated to be up to 300 people at the height of the survey, ruled the market until a unit of the federal army arrived, which had been called up to pacify the district. But while elsewhere the putschists fled after the news of the arrival of the federal army, those of Preding even fought a short firefight with the army before their departure on the afternoon of July 26th. After the coup was suppressed, 60 people were arrested in the area of the Preding Gendarmerie Paleon for involvement in it, and 15 others, including Chibidziura, had successfully escaped to Yugoslavia. A number of Predinger putschists were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

Population development

The population of Preding has been around 1500 since the 19th century and has increased since the last decades of the 20th century.

Predinger Pumpkin Festival

The Predinger Pumpkin Festival is the oldest pumpkin festival in Europe . Every year a so-called “pumpkin mayor” is elected. The contenders sit around a round table with a large bowl of semolina (“woazkoch”) on it. A pumpkin hanging over it is then dropped into this bowl and the person who gets the most of this pulp is appointed the new “pumpkin mayor”.

A youth pumpkin mayor is also elected every year. The pumpkin festival takes place annually at the end of August or in September, in 2013 from August 24th to 25th.

Preding sent a delegation to the 2003 international pumpkin festival in the Brandenburg municipality of Kloster Lehnin .

Holy Rinn '

The "Heilige Rinn '" is a spring in a wooded area in the north of Preding. The water from this spring is said to have special powers since the 19th century when an almost blind lumberjack began to see better again by washing his eyes with this water. The place was restored in 2001/02 and consecrated on August 14, 2006 by the parish priest of Preding.

societies

The Preding volunteer fire brigade, which was founded in 1872, is an important cultural institution in Preding; also the market music band Preding, founded in 1876; and Rural Youth Preding, founded on December 24, 1950.

Other clubs in Preding include the football club, the Preding riding and driving club, the ladies' shoe platters, ice runners and others.

economy

Preding has a business park. A wood processing company with around 160 employees is located on Wieserbahn and Schröttenstrasse L 601.

For tourism, there are some guest houses that also offer farm holidays and riding holidays.

The last rope maker in Styria, Friedrich Teppernegg, works in Preding. He is one of the last rope masters in Austria. His “mechanical rope making” products include natural fiber ropes made of hemp or sisal, synthetic fiber ropes, braided lines, lifting straps, round slings, scaffolding and binding ropes, packaging cords, sausage binding threads, but also bungy jumping ropes. In addition to these ultra-modern rubber ropes, fishing nets, football nets, etc. are also manufactured.

The Preding-Wieselsdorf station is the station of the Wieserbahn of the Graz-Köflacher Railway . It is also the terminus of the Stainzerbahn , whose commercial operation was discontinued in 1980 with the dismantling of the four-rail track. However, since 1999 there has been a separate parallel track leading to the station. The Koralmbahn passes Preding, the nearest stop is in the neighboring community of Wettmannstätten.
