history

The Großradl area is located on the northern slope of the mountain range, over which the road connections between the southern part of historical Styria ( Lower Styria ) and its northern parts ( Central and Upper Styria ) run. In the Middle Ages, these paths were secured by several fortifications, of which only small remains are left. It was about wood-earth systems, so-called moths , at least partially stone foundations were present.

The facility on the Turmbauerkogel in the Sterglegg cadastral community is a listed building . It consisted of two tower castles, between which the unevenness of the terrain of the earlier system can still be seen.

In the cadastral municipality of Pongratzen there was another tower castle hill near Kleinwuggitz, which has the shape of an elliptical truncated cone . It is about six meters high and its plateau measures 13 × 15 meters. Two slope steps ( berms ) can still be seen, as well as the remains of a wall.

Location of the former municipality of Großradl in the Deutschlandsberg district with the municipal boundaries until the end of 2014

A third place, where there were indications of a tower castle hill and which had been known since around 1888, was removed in 1976: the then so-called “Beisser-Schlosskogel”. He was in the cadastral community of Wuggitz on a ridge between the Wuggitzbach and the Latin stream near the Großwuggitz settlement. A layer of fire was found during the removal of the hill. There are no more indications at this point, and no documentary mentions are known. It is no longer possible to determine whether it was actually a weir from the Carolingian era .

Whether the "Hof in der Ladein", which was lent to Jakob aus der Ladein by the Bishop of Seckau in 1318 , was located at one of the three tower castle locations, whether it is another small fortification or whether it was the name of the medieval settlement that further north at the Pfaffenkraner-Waldschloss in the municipality of Pitschgau is not occupied.

The community of Großradl existed from 1969 to 2014. In 1969 the previously independent communities of Kleinradl and Kornriegl were merged with the cadastral community of Stammeregg and the part of the cadastral community of Bachholz of the former community of Stammeregg to form the new community of Großradl. The municipality of Kleinradl in its former form had only emerged one year earlier, on January 1, 1968, from the municipalities of Feisternitz, Kleinradl and Oberlatein. As early as January 1, 1961, the Sterglegg community was merged with what was then Kornriegl.

Großradl does not have its own parish church, but belongs to the parish Eibiswald . Smaller parts of the parish belong to the Oberhaag parish.
