geography

The community of St. Josef is located on the Wieserbahn in the western Styrian hill country.

Cadastral communities and localities

The municipality consists of three cadastral communities or towns of the same name (area: as of January 1, 2015, inhabitants: as of January 1, 2020):

  • Oisnitz (389.90 ha, 409 Ew.)
  • Sankt Josef (West Styria) (674.51 ha, 728 Ew.)
  • Tobisegg (265.68 ha, 482 Ew.)

Incorporations

  • On January 1st, 1968 Oisnitz and Tobisegg were incorporated. Oisnitz had already formed the former parish of St. Josef bei Stainz with St. Josef by 1920, which was then separated into the communities of Oisnitz and St. Josef bei Stainz.
  • The southern part of the Tobisegg cadastral parish belonging to the Preding parish was moved to the Preding parish on January 1, 1969.

The municipality was not affected by the Styrian municipal structural reform , which reduced the number of municipalities in the Deutschlandsberg district from 40 to 15 in 2015. However, as part of this reform, requests were made to join part of the area to the Stainztal community instead of the Stainz community according to the parish affiliation of St. Josef.
