Georgsberg is an area in western Styria . Until the end of 2014 it was a municipality with 1528 inhabitants (as of 2014) in the Deutschlandsberg district ( Deutschlandsberg judicial district ). As part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , Georgsberg was merged with the municipalities of Marhof , Rassach , Stainz , Stainztal and Stallhof in 2015 , and the new municipality continues the name of Stainz. The basis for this is the Styrian Municipal Structural Reform Act - StGsrG.

The former municipality of Georgsberg was created on January 1, 1968 through the merger of the municipalities Ettendorf bei Stainz, Pichling bei Stainz and Rossegg. Georgsberg has since consisted of the three cadastral communities (area 2017):

history

The Georgsberg area has been inhabited for thousands of years. This is documented by a number of barrows , two groups of graves in the KG Pichling are under monument protection. Further burial mounds in this area were examined in 2006, whereby remains of burials (fire debris) were found, but older faults such as the installation of a beet cellar and its remains had to be found in one of the mounds. Another burial mound remained unexplored, but also showed the remains of earlier excavations.

In 1809 the area of ​​the municipality was burdened by requisitions by the French army in the Fifth Coalition War . In the north-west of the municipality, in the forest between Lichtenhof and Pichling (Sechtaberg district), the French Cross commemorates an incident in which three French people were killed by local farmers. This cross was re-erected in 2009 and solemnly blessed on July 19, 2009.

In the basement of the house vlg. Fuchs in Ettendorf, two stone pillars are built in, which could come from the former St. Georg Church (which was demolished around 1788) or from Herbersdorf Castle .

The names of the former communities Ettendorf and Pichling were changed on June 1, 1951 to Ettendorf bei Stainz and Pichling bei Stainz .

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census of workplaces , there were 38 workplaces with 106 employees in Georgsberg as well as 598 out-commuters and 93 in-commuters. The most important branch of the community is trade. In 1999 there were 88 agricultural and forestry holdings (21 of which were the main occupation), which together farmed 1087 ha.

The TEZ = Technology and Development Center Georgsberg-Stainz-St. Has existed in Georgsberg since 2003. Stefan. It is a development center for industry and has two leading companies, TCM and Peter, as well as many small and medium-sized companies. TCM employs 70 people in 2006, and there are currently 200 employees in the entire center. The number of employees has tripled in the last five years due to additional company developments on the site of the former VW workshop.

According to the 2001 census, the Georgsberg area had 1,422 inhabitants. 98.0% of them had Austrian citizenship. 94.5% of the population professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church, 3.2% were without religious beliefs.

Population development

After the population declined in the interwar period, the population recovered after World War II and has increased to this day. From 1951 to 2001 the population increased by 50%.

Municipal council

In the last municipal council elections in 2010, the ÖVP was able to further expand its supremacy. She achieved a share of the vote of 85.53% and was able to increase her result from 2005 by 7.27% and win an additional mandate.

Georgsberg received the right to use the municipal coat of arms in 1980. The coat of arms shows a white dragon sitting on three white hills on a blue background. A long, white sword pierces the dragon's throat and body.
