history

etymology

The name "Lannach" is associated with the earlier landlords, the Lunnachern (Lannachern), whose name is derived from a tributary of the Kainach, the Laan (or Lahn); the "u" is a misunderstood reading for a not completely closed above in an old document, thus "open" a. The name is mentioned as Lunach in 1172. According to recent research, the place name Lannach belongs to the type of resident names of Slavic origin, which were borrowed into German in the locative, i.e. from Slavic ( pri) lunjach "(among the inhabitants of) Lunje".

The name itself is

  • 1172 as "Lunach",
  • 1245 "Leunach",
  • 1319 "Laenach",
  • 1414 "Lanach"

and means "place where birds of prey occur" (in Slovene . lunj "bird of prey, bird of prey, etc."). The name of the community is pronounced in everyday life with a stressed long a (for example: [ l'ɑnaχ ]). Historical names of the small stream (Laan, Lahn) where the place is located and the old spelling “Lanach” (see the historical maps below) are evidence that the doubling of the n in the name of Lannach is not evidence of a vowel shortening .

The Laan (Lahn, Lann) is a southern tributary of the Kainach, the longest in this area. The course and water flow are shown differently on the maps. The name is not derived from the old Bavarian word for avalanche (“Lahn”) (in Lannach there are no steep or long slopes on which avalanches usually occur), nor from Lehne , but from Celtic “Lahn (e)” - sluggish Water. "Lahnen" are rivulets created by larger rivers, backwaters or silting river arms, which were part of the landscape of the western Styrian valleys before the river regulations.

The second syllable in the name "Lannach" is the old word for stream, river: Ach (e).

Modern times

Lannach Castle was built at the end of the 16th century .

During the National Socialist July coup in 1934, the Lannach gendarmerie post, manned by only two men, which had been hurriedly put into a state of defense by a machine gun provided by the Heimwehr local group in Dobl , was completely on its own, as all neighboring posts were occupied by the National Socialists and theirs Weapons had been robbed. As it later turned out, the National Socialists had also planned to fill the Lannacher Posten, but because of the rapid collapse of the putsch, this had not happened. Seven people were arrested in the area of the Lannach gendarmerie post for involvement in the July coup.

A heavy blow for the economic life of the community followed in October 1934 when the Lannach roof tile and pottery factory had to cease operations as a result of the global economic crisis . Around 90 people became unemployed as a result.

In 1948 the war memorial of Prof. Rudolf Zilli was created . In 1962 the elevation to the parish took place . In 1973 Lannach celebrated its 800th anniversary.

On January 1, 1969, the communities of Blumegg, Teipl, Lannach and Breitenbach in western Styria were merged to form today's community of Lannach.

The name of the municipality of Breitenbach was changed to "Breitenbach in West Styria" on June 1, 1951.

In 1995 Lannach became a market town and in 2003 Lannach became the "Municipality of Europe".

The small tributaries in the Kainachtal confirm this interpretation: they are sometimes “flat and full” after rainfall (with water that cannot drain quickly due to the lack of a gradient and promotes swamping).
