The Caritas of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau (or Caritas Steiermark ) is a social aid organization of the Roman Catholic Church in the Austrian state of Styria and part of Caritas Austria . It is an independent institution and reports to the bishop of the Graz-Seckau diocese .

The Caritas of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau is divided into four areas with eleven departments:

Herbert Beiglböck is the director of Caritas Styria. The four division heads together with the director form the management. In 2017, Caritas Styria had 1542 employees. In addition, around 900 volunteers and 100 civil servants were active in facilities and projects.

The Caritas of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau offers help in the following areas:

people in need

In the area of ​​"people in need" there are the following priorities:

  • Work: We support people who are disadvantaged in the labor market or who have difficulties getting back into work. Employment projects are offered under the name “WerkStart”: sales in the Caritas Carla warehouse or in the Solidarity market, in the catering trade, when sorting donations in kind, during transport or during cleaning. The goals are stabilization, strengthening of self-confidence and bringing people closer to the level of performance of the free economy. In 2017, 573 adults were given temporary employment. 117 unemployed were placed on the regular labor market.
  • Health: Basic medical care is offered for the uninsured and inpatient therapy in the Aloisianum to support after alcohol withdrawal .
  • Social: The core tasks are free and discreet advice to people in financial and social need, the distribution of food and the provision of a lunch table in the Marienstüberl. Over 100,000 hot meals were served here in 2017. Volunteers worked 11,000 hours.
  • Housing: The areas of responsibility range from securing housing in the event of rent arrears and the threat of housing loss to the provision of emergency sleeping places in the event of acute housing shortage and taking care of the homeless in winter with the cold telephone.

Children and young people

The following services are offered for children and young people with or without a migration background:

  • Learning and working: Volunteers help with homework free of charge in learning cafés. The youth employment project Start2Works offers 15- to 20-year-olds commissioned by the Employment Service an opportunity to enter the labor market Styria. In 2017, 133 young people gained work experience. In the LernBar project , young people receive learning support at four Graz locations. This project is carried out in cooperation with the Styrian umbrella organization for open youth work and is funded by the integration department of the city of Graz. The Superar initiative is an intercultural choir program for primary school children . The Be Qualified * project, supported by the city of Graz, supports apprentices with tutoring sessions specially tailored to vocational students.
  • Kindergarten and day care center: Caritas Styria runs the Marienkindergarten and a school day care center in Bruck / Mur .
  • Advice and support: The Caritas of the Graz-Seckau diocese offers free advice to pupils and parents in all districts of Styria . After an accident or death of a parent, or in the event of illness, children are looked after temporarily. The family relief service provided over 20,000 hours in 2017. In addition, international Caritas Austria projects are supported, for example the preparation for elementary school for 25 children from socially disadvantaged families in the eastern Slovak city of Stropkov .

Families and women

Caritas Steiermark offers help and support tailored to families and women in the following areas:

  • Family help at home: childcare, cooking and shopping are supported in crisis situations for up to eight weeks per year.
  • Pregnancy and upbringing: In addition to a counseling center for pregnant women, a contact point for anonymous birth ( baby hatch ) and a meeting place for (expectant) mothers and fathers are offered.

Seniors

One of the main tasks of Caritas Styria is to look after the elderly:

  • Emergency telephone: To increase the safety of elderly people living alone, the installation of emergency telephones is free of charge.
  • Assisted living: If people from the age of 54 are no longer able to stay in their own home in the short or medium term ( care level 1 to 3), they receive medical care, meals on wheels and travel services.
  • Nursing homes: Caritas Styria operates 17 nursing homes.

Migrants and refugees

In the area of ​​migrants and refugees, the following priorities are set:

  • Advice and support: In 2017, 11,200 advice sessions were held with people from 72 nations.
  • Accommodation: Asylum seekers are assigned by the Styrian Provincial Government . The main tasks are help with coping with everyday life, clarification of perspectives and support with contacts with authorities.
  • Integration: The topic of integration includes the sale of the street newspaper Megaphon , social integration through football and refugee sponsorships.

People with disabilities

Caritas Styria offers help for people with disabilities as well as for their families:

  • Family relief service: This mobile service gives family members hourly or daily freedom to attend to their own needs.
  • Personal assistance: The offer includes personal hygiene, food consumption, shopping, doctor support as well as communication and leisure activities.
  • Advice: Those affected receive free information about barrier-free living , the Styrian Disability Act and official channels.
  • Residential facilities for people with mental health problems in Graz and Deutschlandsberg .

Help abroad

Caritas Styria works with the international Caritas network on foreign aid.

  • Priorities: The priorities of these projects are children, Roma minorities , hunger and education.

Most of the income consists of remuneration for operating income (70%), subsidies (15%) and donations (10%). In 2017 the total budget was almost one hundred million euros.

According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, donations to Caritas Styria are tax deductible as special expenses.
