The Caritas St. Pölten is a social organization of the Roman Catholic church in the Austrian state of Lower Austria and part of Caritas Austria . It is an independent institution and reports to the bishop of the diocese of St. Pölten .

Caritas St. Pölten is divided into five areas:

  • Personnel and Economy
  • Solidarity, communication and social issues
  • Family and care
  • Psychosocial institutions
  • For people with disabilities

The director of Caritas St. Pölten is Hannes Ziselsberger. In 2017, Caritas St. Pölten employed 2328 people. In addition, 528 volunteers were involved and a further 5,000 women and men worked for Caritas in the parishes of the diocese.

Familys

Caritas St. Pölten supports families in difficult situations:

  • Advice: Advice on the topics of partnership problems, family planning, pregnancy and parenting, work, occupation, bullying, separation, grief, illness and addiction as well as legal advice are offered in a protected setting. The aim of counseling is to solve difficult situations independently. The consultations are free of charge.
  • Child minders are provided for childcare . In 2017, 449 children were looked after by 79 child minders.
  • Family helper: If the mother falls ill, a qualified social worker takes care of the children for 20 to 35 hours a week. The cost of this depends on the family's income.
  • Mother-child house: This house in St. Pölten offers pregnant women and mothers with small children a temporary home in conflict situations. 45 women and children were cared for in the mother-child house in 2017.

Children and young people

The wide range of offers for children and young people includes:

  • Learning cafés: On two afternoons a week, volunteer learning guides offer support with homework and targeted preparation for exams. Participation is free.
  • Youth counseling: In the counseling centers in Amstetten , Gmünd , Horn , Krems , Lilienfeld , Mank , Melk , Scheibbs , St. Pölten , Tulln , Waidhofen an der Thaya , Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Zwettl , topics such as friendship, love and sexuality can be answered anonymously and free of charge , Difficulties with parents, school and friends, fear, violence and addiction are discussed.
  • Youth coaching at schools: Young people in the Gmünd, Horn, Krems, Melk, Tulln, Waidhofen an der Thaya and Zwettl locations receive advice on transitioning from school to working life.
  • Vocational training assistance: Especially young people with disabilities between the ages of 13 and 24 are supported in their search for a training position.
  • youngCaritas would like to sensitize young people to charitable issues, draw attention to hidden poverty and need and enable social engagement on a small scale.

People in need of care

The offers are aimed at people in need of care themselves and their relatives:

  • Support at home: In order to enable people in need of care to live in their homes, volunteers offer emergency telephones and visiting services , meals on wheels and 24-hour care . In 2017, almost 300 customers received over 50,000 hot meals.
  • Care and care at home: Starting from the social stations Zentralraum, Mostviertel Ost, Mostviertel West and Waldviertel , people are supported in caring for their relatives. The help ranges from advice and training for relatives to shopping, accompaniment and personal hygiene to the administration of medication, wound care and administration of injections.
  • The Haus St. Elisabeth nursing home in St. Pölten is a contract home for the state of Lower Austria and offers short-term accommodation for up to six weeks, transitional care for rehabilitation for up to twelve weeks and permanent living. A total of 80 people can be cared for temporarily and 177 people in the nursing home.
  • Care courses lasting four evenings are offered for relatives. Round tables and group meetings are also held regularly to share experiences.

People with disabilities

For people with disabilities and their relatives, the Caritas of the Diocese of St. Pölten offers:

  • Work: A wide range of offers helps you to explore your own skills, whether in workshops, recycling companies or in the Caritas warehouse. In addition to the opportunity to get to know different activities, lunch, support on the way to and from work, as well as further training and help in finding a job are offered. In 2017, 737 women and men worked in the 15 workshops of Caritas St. Pölten.
  • Living: If you have your own apartment, Caritas St. Pölten supports up to seven hours a week with household chores, administrative procedures and money management. If independent living is not possible, 16 houses with part-time or full-time supervised living are available.

People with mental illness

  • Counseling: The Psychosocial Service is an institution financed by the state of Lower Austria for counseling and support for mentally ill people. There is also anonymous and free advice for alcohol, drug and drug addicts, as well as advice for relatives.
  • Leisure activities: To maintain health and to increase self-esteem and quality of life, the Active Club offers regular meetings with sport, education and music.
  • Professional integration: Both those affected and the companies are supported through help with choosing a career, starting a career and providing direct support at the workplace.
  • Housing: People with mental illnesses, who are largely self-employed, receive support in organizing everyday life and in crisis situations.

1.5 million people in Austria are at risk of poverty . A small change in the environment is enough to get into an emergency. In 2017, over 10,000 people stood up for people in need in Lower Austria.

  • Advice: For people who get into an existential emergency, Caritas St. Pölten in Amstetten, Krems, St. Pölten and Waidhofen an der Thaya offers talks to clarify the situation and work out possible solutions. In 2017, a total of 10,243 people were advised.
  • Housing security: One of the main goals is the preservation of the home. In addition to the advice on the rights and obligations as a tenant, a budget is developed and proposed solutions to cover a rent arrears are worked out.
  • Emergency aid: In existential emergencies, financial aid is also given. Over 500,000 euros were granted as bridging aid in 2017.
  • Disaster relief: In the event of regional disasters such as floods, fires or other accidents, domestic disaster relief helps quickly and unbureaucratically.

Asylum and integration

  • Basic care : Caritas St. Pölten offers people on the run food and accommodation in refugee accommodation for the duration of the asylum procedure .
  • Advice: Advice includes social law matters, intervention with authorities, information about asylum and aliens law as well as return assistance in the form of assistance in obtaining travel documents, assistance in establishing contacts in the home country and the development of future prospects after the Return.
  • Voluntary engagement: Volunteers offer support in learning German and organizing the day.

Mobile hospice

  • Hospice accompaniment: Hospice accompaniment includes walks with the seriously ill, reflecting on life together, finding last wishes and relieving relatives.

Foreign aid

Caritas St. Pölten works with the international Caritas network to provide foreign aid. Project countries are Albania , Senegal and Pakistan . Projects are the fight against hunger and the care of children. Over 20,000 families were helped in these three countries in 2017.

Finances

The main portions of the revenue are
  • public revenues for care and nursing, houses and workshops for people with disabilities (60%),
  • Subsidies for psychosocial services, addiction counseling, professional integration and family support (15%),
  • private sales revenues for care and maintenance, the Caritas warehouse, the nursing home and the emergency telephone (15%),
  • as well as donations (4%).

In 2017 the total budget was almost one hundred million euros.

According to the Federal Ministry of Finance, donations to Caritas St. Pölten are tax-deductible as special expenses.
