Sector 7 (Original title: Chil Gwanggu ) is a South Korean monster film from 2011. Directed by Kim Ji-hoon .

action

A team is looking for new oil wells on the Sector 7 oil rig off the coast of Jeju . Hae-joon in particular is convinced that they will find what they are looking for. After several failures, Hae-joon's uncle Lee Jeong-man returns to the island. After a while they actually run into oil under his guidance. Suddenly, however, there are two deaths on the oil rig. At first, suicide is still being considered. But on closer inspection of the oil rig, Hae-joon discovers a monster. The lines to the mainland are cut. So the team tries to escape from the island. However, the monster finds them. First, they can escape the team.

But Lee Jeong-man's motive is suddenly called into question. He was not at all surprised by the monster. He admits that he was on the oil rig 20 years ago. In the process, his team discovered new types of animals. The body fluid of the newly discovered species can burn for up to 30 hours. Jeong-man saw it as a new resource that could replace oil. However, an accident occurred shortly after during repair work and the oil rig was closed for the time being.

When Jeong-man came back to Sector 7, he instructed the scientists to breed the animals again. However, a large specimen could break out and now threaten the whole team. Hae-joon is disappointed with their uncle, but first they have to flee the oil rig. But the monster can find them again and kill more people. Jeong-man tries to create the monster on his own. He can set it on fire, but dies in the process. The monster jumps into the water to put out the fire. It comes back to the oil rig, weakening. Hae-joon's friend is killed while trying to protect her. Finally, Hae-joon manages to escape to the drill with the motorcycle and can kill the monster there with it.

reception

The film opened in South Korean cinemas on August 4, 2011 and recorded a total of over 2.2 million viewers.

For film critic James Marsh, Sector 7 is a disappointment after high expectations. It is almost an alien (1979) on an oil rig. Ha Ji-won is perfectly suited for the role, but has no opportunity to show her skills in the film. The characters are too stereotypical. The editors of the German magazine Cinema awarded 3 out of 5 stars and described Sector 7 as a “glossy short-term for Trash lovers”. In the lexicon of the international film you can read: "Claustrophobic monster horror with a hint of an ecological message, which is too much to be found in its emphatically sharp images."
