List of political districts in Styria
The list shows the districts of Styria , the second largest federal state in Austria .
The largest district in Austria in terms of area is Liezen , in which the political branch of Gröbming is located, which has many, but not all of the tasks of an independent district (not: social welfare, youth welfare, community auditing and disaster control).
Cities with their own statute do not belong to any district. The only statutory city in Styria is the provincial capital Graz , smaller than the smallest district, but more populous than the most populous district with over 270,000 inhabitants. Graz is also the seat of the administration of the surrounding Graz-Umgebung district .
The smallest town in Styria in terms of inhabitants is Friedberg in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district with 2641 inhabitants (January 1, 2020).
As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria , with effect from January 1, 2015, there were some minor shifts in the district boundaries in order to assign new communities, which are composed of former communities in different districts, to only one district: This is e.g. B. the case with the new communities Schwarzautal , Fladnitz an der Teichalm or Landl . The basis is an ordinance of the state government.
District mergers
As the first district merger in the Second Republic , the political district of Murtal (area: 1,675.78 km², 71,698 inhabitants) was created from the previous political districts Judenburg and Knittelfeld .
In April 2012, the Styrian state government decided to merge further districts with effect from January 1, 2013 (status: area 2020; inhabitants January 1, 2020):
- Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district , from the previous political districts of Bruck / Mur and Mürzzuschlag (area: 2,154.8 km², 98,697 inhabitants, district chief : Gabriele Budiman [MZ])
- Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district , from the previous political districts Fürstenfeld and Hartberg (area: 1,227.59 km², 90,606 inhabitants, district captain: Max Wiesenhofer [HB])
- District of Southeast Styria , from the previous political districts of Feldbach and Radkersburg (area: 985.22 km², 84,036 inhabitants, district captain: Alexander Majcan [RA])
Furthermore, the agendas of the Political Expositur Aussee were transferred to the Liezen district administration with effect from January 1, 2012, only one branch remains in Bad Aussee (Citizens Service Office).
According to the 2011-2015 administrative reform program of the Styrian state government, the merger of the district authorities should bring about a more cost-effective state administration without restricting proximity to the citizens. According to forecasts by the provincial government, Styria will save around EUR 10 million in the long term, mainly through savings in personnel costs. The state government also announced that no further district reorganizations should take place.
