Gralla is a market town in the south of Styria with 2552 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) near the city of Leibnitz ( judicial district or Leibnitz district ).

Geographical location

Gralla is located in the Leibnitz an Mur and Pyhrn district of the A 9 motorway in the Austrian state of Styria . In the north-eastern part of Altgralla, the Mur is dammed by a river power station . The resulting reservoir is a popular place for numerous migratory birds . In addition to the seasonal migratory birds, you can also observe swans , mallards , coots and similar native bird species all year round from two viewing huts .

Community structure

Gralla consists of the two cadastral communities Obergralla and Untergralla. The only village is Gralla. Districts are Ober- and Untergralla as well as Alt- and Straßengralla. Obergralla is also known as Neugralla among the Gralligers .

history

The local church as an autonomous body was established in 1850.

After Austria was annexed to the German Reich in 1938 , the municipality became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark . 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria. In the past, a wooden bridge crossed the Mur in Altgralla, but it was blown up during the withdrawal of the British soldiers and was replaced by a concrete bridge.

With effect from October 1, 2015, the municipality of Gralla was granted the right to use the designation “market municipality”.

Economy and Infrastructure

The place is residential, commercial and agricultural community. Gralla is one of the largest trading communities in southern Styria and has a large shopping center located at the motorway exit.

There is a river power station on the Mur.

The right to use the municipal coat of arms was granted to the municipality of Gralla on March 6, 1972 by the Styrian state government.

The production of the coat of arms was carried out by the Styrian State Archives according to the documents of the monastery library in Leibnitz . The four stars symbolize the districts of Ober-, Alt-, Unter- and Straße Gralla. The silver wavy bar represents the Mur , while the green represents the forests in the area. The bishop's hat reminds of St. Rupert .
