Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing is a market town with 1551 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Leibnitz district in the Austrian state of Styria . Since January 2015, as part of the municipal structural reform, it has been expanded to include the cadastral municipality of Hart and some other properties from the previously existing municipality of Stocking .

Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing is located east of the Mur on the northeast edge of the Leibnitzer Feld in Styria.

history

The parish church was mentioned in a document as early as 1147. Together with the castle, it forms a structural ensemble.

The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community came to the Reichsgau Steiermark, 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Wolfgang Neubauer (ÖVP), who had already acted as mayor until December 31, 2014 and from January 1, 2015, led the business of the merged community as government commissioner , was re-elected mayor at the constituent meeting of the local council on April 17, 2015.

The community board also includes the deputy mayor Franz Egger (ÖVP) and the community treasurer Elfriede Obendrauf (ÖVP).

The head of office is Monika Pletzl.
