history

Heiligenkreuz was first mentioned in 1265 in the princely land register of Styria. A separate parish can be traced as early as 1271.

In 1849, as a result of the revolution of 1848, the municipal self-government was formed. In 1984 the community was raised to the market.

On December 31, 2015, a fire that was discovered at 1.30 p.m. and extinguished by 8 p.m. caused the local wood chip heating power plant to fail. It supplies around 500–600 citizens and some public institutions. As early as the following New Year's Day at 3:00 am, an oil boiler that had been procured as a replacement was put into operation for an expected 4–6 weeks.

Culture and sights

Parish church

The high altar of the parish church

The parish church was built in four phases. Today's eastern side chapel is a late Gothic component and has a keystone indicating the year 1547 as the year of construction. Nothing remains of the baroque nave with two bays and two side chapels from 1684. The builder Johann Georg Stengg built the four- story tower in 1746. From 1891 to 1894, the church was extensively rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style by Robert Mikovics . The old baroque nave was torn down and replaced by one with five bays. In addition, galleries, groin vaults and wall pillars were built. The one-bay choir has a straight end.

The cartilage-style high altar from the 17th century comes from Maribor, now Slovenia, and was installed in 1894. In the Gothic chapel there is a baptismal font with the figure of St. John Nepomuk . The rest of the furnishings come from the time of the renovation. The bell was cast by Franz Anton Weyer in 1721. Next to the parish church is the three-storey rectory, which was occupied in 1790.

Calvary Church

The Kalvarienbergkirche is dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother . It is a single-aisled building with a single-tower facade and was built by Johann Georg Stengg in 1756. The interior has an almost square floor plan, a flat altar niche and a curved singing gallery. At the altar there is a lamentation group with angels from 1762. Behind it, angels with the arms of Christ , God the Father and a view of Jerusalem are depicted on a fresco . The pulpit and the image of the Immaculate Conception date from the third quarter of the 18th century.
