history

Early history and antiquity

The place was already settled in the Middle Bronze Age. No finds come from the Hallstatt period that followed. An extensive late Latène period settlement, which can perhaps be described as a group of homesteads, was on the same site. Several wings of the building were erected there during the Roman Empire. At least two bath buildings date from this period, as well as luxurious rooms furnished with wall paintings and mosaics ( Roman Villa Retznei / Kreuzacker ) . A building is called a nymphaeum , and for this reason the consideration is given as to whether the entire complex could not be a private villa, but a spring sanctuary with an attached thermal bath complex in the vicinity of the town of Flavia Solva . A found altar also points in this direction. The Roman quarry near Unterlupitscheni proves the economic connection between the area and the city as a whole.

The area of Retznei has been known as an archaeological site since the end of the 19th century, when the first excavations were carried out by the numismatist Friedrich Pichler. More detailed investigations, in which the site of the old excavation could initially be localized, took place between 2005 and 2010.

Middle Ages and early modern times

On the Rosenberg there was a habitable defense tower, which the Pettauer owned as Salzburg feudal men. After this knight family died out, the tower became sovereign in 1438 and was passed on. The administration of the Lupitscheni viticulture , which is documented as a name in the early 12th century and as a viticulture in 1408 , was probably located here . The permanent settlement in the vineyards did not arise until the middle modern period. When the Turks marched back from Vienna , the area was devastated in 1532 and was still desolate in 1541. In 1636 the plague broke out in Oberlupitscheni and spread over the entire wine-growing region.

The wine was of inferior quality until the early 19th century and was called "Wurstwein" (snack wine). In 1885 "good quality" was reported. In 1861 the area under cultivation was around 21  hectares (of which only 1 hectare in the village itself), with a yield of around 300  guilders .

Former parish

The abolition of the lords took place in 1848. The local community as an autonomous body of the Crown Land of Styria (Duchy of Steyer) was established in 1850 after the revolution of 1848/49 . From the "mountain houses" in the Lupitscheni am Retzneibach wine-growing region, the downstream part, then called Unterluitscheni , came to Retznei, while Oberlupitscheni (above Aflenz ) was incorporated into Seggauberg .

Around 1869 (when Austria-Hungary was founded ) it comprised around 70 buildings with a good 400 inhabitants, although the village itself only had 25 buildings with a good 150 inhabitants, the rest of them lived in what is now Unterlupitscheni.

After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark, from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Since 2015, Retznei has been merged with the municipalities of Berghausen , Ehrenhausen and Ratsch an der Weinstrasse as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform , the new municipality bears the name Ehrenhausen an der Weinstrasse . The former municipality area will be continued as a district (local area) of the new municipality.

The last mayor was Detlef Gruber (SPÖ). After the 2010 elections, the municipal council was composed as follows: 6  SPÖ , 3  ÖVP .

Economy and Infrastructure

Retznei lives mainly from agriculture. The most important crops are: grapes, fruit (for apple juice, schnapps), pumpkins and beans. Numerous wines come from this region, which have already won prizes at wine tastings. The municipality of Retznei is also known for good and award-winning schnapps.

The most important employer is the company Lafarge Perlmooser , one of the world's largest cement manufacturers. The company operates a plant and the Retznei quarry , a large limestone quarry that is divided into two outcrops. The older one has been in operation since the turn of the last century, but is currently being recultivated and converted into a large biotope. The second breach on Rosenberg was only developed on a large scale a few years ago.
