Country: | Empire of Austria and Austria-Hungary |
Subdivision: | 100 new cruisers |
Abbreviation: | F, Frt, Ft (Forint, Hungarian) Fl (Florin, Latin) |
Exchange rate : (fixed) |
1 guilder = 2 crowns |
The Austrian guilder was the currency of the Austrian Empire and, from 1867, of Austria-Hungary . It was introduced in 1858 because of the Vienna Mint Treaty instead of the thaler , which, unlike the guilder, was not counted in the decimal system . The guilder was in circulation in Austria until 1900, although it was replaced by the crown in 1892 .
history
Empire of Austria
Due to the Vienna Mint Treaty, the currency was changed in the German Customs Union in 1858 so that it could be converted into all national currencies involved. A Vereinstaler was thus equivalent to the northern and central Germany Talern, 1 3 / 4 Gulden or 105 Kreuzer the southern German Association currency, or 1 1 / 2 Gulden (150 Neukreuzer ) of the Austrian currency. In contrast to the taler, which was used in Austria before the gulden, the gulden was calculated in the decimal system . The conventional thaler was exchanged at a ratio of 1: 2 to the guilder.
Austria-Hungary
In 1867 the unified state of Austria was reclassified into the dual monarchy Austria-Hungary . Hungary had the right to its own currency, but Austria and Hungary agreed to keep the common currency. For the countries of the Hungarian crown , however, from 1868 separate guilder coins with the designation forint were minted.
In 1892 the gulden was exchanged at a ratio of 1: 2 to the crown, but remained in circulation until 1900. Even as a unit of account, the guilder remained in use for years after the conversion to the crown, for example in the law on acquisition tax in 1896 (RGBl 220/1896).
Coins
Coins of the Austrian half of the empire
Copper coins were initially used in values from one Heller (= 1 ⁄ 8 Kreuzer) to one Kreuzer. There were also silver coins in values ranging from 3 kreuzers to one conventional thaler. The Turkish and Napoleonic wars led to a change in these initially used values. The new values included a coin with the value of 12 kreuzers, which, however, only had a silver value of 6 kreuzers. It was later minted as the 7 Kreuzer coin. In 1807 the coins were minted with values of 15 and 30 kreuzers. These values were issued in banknotes, but in 1814 the coins were changed back to their pre-war values.
In 1857 the guilder was decimalized, the newly introduced coins were 0.5 kreuzer (written 5 ⁄ 10 ), 1 kreuzer and 4 kreuzer in copper. The silver coins were 5, 10 and 20 Kreuzer and 1 ⁄ 4 , 1 and 2 guilders as well as 1 and 2 Vereinstaler . The gold coins were 4 and 8 guilders and 10 and 20 francs. The minting of the Vereinstaler was stopped in 1867. A club thaler was 1 1 ⁄ 2 gulden.

Coins of the Hungarian half of the empire
Hungary had started producing its own coins as early as 1329 and used Austrian coins until compensation . The only copper coin was the 1 1 ⁄ 2 Krajczár (= cruiser) coin. There were silver coins with the values of 3, 5, 10, 20, and 30 Kreuzer and 1 ⁄ 2 and 1 Conventional Thaler. The values ceased to exist between 1794 and 1830. In 1830 there were silver coins of 20 kreuzers and above. From 1868, one year after the Equalization (1867), the Hungarian half of the empire began to mint its own coins. The values were smaller than those of the Austrian half of the empire . They included copper coins of 5 ⁄ 10 , 1 and 4 kreuzers, silver coins of 10 and 20 kreuzers and 1 forint, and gold coins of 4 and 8 forints.

Bills
Between 1759 and 1811 the Bank of the City of Vienna issued paper money, but the values were not always the same. In 1811 the values were finally fixed. At that time the Privileged United Redemption and Repayment Deputation began to issue notes with fixed values, followed by the Austrian Central Bank in 1816 and the Privileged Austrian National Bank from 1825 to 1863. In 1858, the notes were marked with "Austrian currency".
