Johan your the Elder (born March 14, 1707 in Lund , † December 1, 1780 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish linguist .

Life

Johan Ihr was the son of the theologian Thomas Ihr (1659-1720) and his first wife Brita Steuchia († 1710). When the father died, the orphaned child grew up with his grandfather, Archbishop Mattias Steuchius (1644–1730).

In 1730 Johan Ihr passed his master's degree in Uppsala . From 1730 to 1733 he studied abroad (including in Oxford , London and Paris ). In 1734 he became a lecturer at Uppsala University and from 1735 he held the prestigious position of librarian there . In 1737 he was appointed professor of Latin poetry. From 1738 until his death he held the Skyttean professorship , one of the most prestigious academic positions in Sweden. He served as rector of the university four times (1745, 1754, 1762 and 1774)

In 1755 Johan Ihr was elected to the Royal Academy of Learning, History and Antiquities ( Swedish Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies ). In 1757 he and his family were raised to the nobility.

Johan Ihr became famous as the founder of Germanic linguistics and comparative linguistics in Sweden. His preliminary work influenced Jacob Grimm's discovery of the Germanic sound shift . In 1769 your etymological dictionary of the Swedish language appeared, in which he systematically derives Swedish words from Old Norse and compares them with other Germanic languages .

Private life

In 1738 Johan married Sara Charlotta Brauner († 1758). After the death of his wife, he married Charlotta Johanna Gerner (1728–1822) a year later.
