Mattias Steuchius (born October 26, 1644 in the Församling Fogdö, Strängnäs parish ; † August 2, 1730 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and bishop, most recently Archbishop of Uppsala .

Life

Steuchius grew up in Härnösand , where his father Petrus Erici Steuchius (1605–1683) was Superintendent of the (later) diocese of Härnösand from 1647 . He studied theology and philosophy at Uppsala University from 1658 . After obtaining his master’s degree in 1668, he went on a study trip to England, Germany and Holland from 1669 to 1671. After his return, Steuchius was ordained in 1672 and appointed as a teacher at the grammar school in Härnösand, where he was promoted to rector in 1674. 1676 became professor of logic and metaphysics at Uppsala University. Here he also officiated as rector in 1678 . In 1672 and 1675 he took part in the Swedish State Council as a member of the parish .

In 1683 he was assigned to his ailing father as an assistant and after his death in 1685 he took over the superintendent's position in Härnösand. Here he sat down by visitations for enforcing the spirit of Lutheran orthodoxy a written church law of the 1686th In 1693 he was awarded a doctorate in theology. In 1694 his appointment as professor of theology and provost to Uppsala had already been decided, but King Charles XI. who visited him personally in 1694, instead appointed him Bishop of Lund , where he worked on the ecclesiastical integration of the Danish area for a long time. Associated with the office of bishop was also the function of Pro-Chancellor of Lund University ; here, however, Steuchius got into sharp conflicts, so that the king finally withdrew the task from him.

In 1714 he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala and thus the highest representative of the Church of Sweden . Although he had always been a supporter of royal absolutism , he campaigned for the independence of the church from the state in the "freedom period" that began in 1720 with the election of King Friedrich . Together with the firm's president Arvid Horn , he fought the pietism that was invading Sweden .

Steuchius was married to Anna Tersera (* July 20, 1653; † April 24, 1723), a daughter of Bishop Johannes Terserus , since 1673 . His children were raised to the nobility in 1719 with the name Steuch. The eldest son Johannes Steuchius was his successor, Elof Steuch (1687–1772) Professor of Mathematics. Of the daughters, Elisabeth was married to the superintendent Petrus Asp , Brita to Professor Thomas Ihr , Anna to Professor Bonde Humerus and later to Landshövding Jonas Wulfwenstierna , Maria to Bishop Nils Barchius and Margareta to Professor Johan Hermansson .
