Johannes Steuchius

Johannes Steuchius , also Jöns Steuchius (born January 3, 1676 in Härnösand , † July 21, 1742 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian, most recently Archbishop of Uppsala from 1730 until his death .

Life

Steuchius, son of the theologian and later Archbishop Mattias Steuchius , studied Protestant theology at the universities of Uppsala and Lund . From 1698 to 1701 he went on a study trip to Germany, France, England and Holland. In Germany he enrolled in November 1698 to study at the University of Rostock. On his return he received a lectureship in philosophy in Uppsala, but in 1702 he became a librarian and associate professor in Lund. In 1707 he was promoted to a full professorship for logic and metaphysics. After ordination in 1709, he returned to Uppsala University as a professor (first for moral theory, but soon again for logic and metaphysics) in early 1710. His position was soon unchallenged when his father-in-law Haquin Spegel took over the office of Archbishop of Uppsala in 1711 and, after his death in 1714, his father. In 1713 and 1720 he was rector of Uppsala University.

In 1723 Steuchius was appointed superintendent of Karlstad . From 1726 he was a member of the pastorate in the Swedish Reichstag . In 1730 he was appointed Bishop of Linköping , but did not take office because he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala in the same year as his father's successor . He held office as the highest dignitary of the Church of Sweden until his death and was spokesman for the parish at the Diets of 1731, 1734 and 1738/39.
