Svenskt biografiskt lexicon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Svenskt biografiskt lexikon (SBL) is the largest general Swedish national biography and successor to the Svenskt biografiskt handlexikon . 33 volumes (9,000 articles on 25,000 pages) have been published since 1917, from Abelin to Strandell. In the first ten volumes (Abelin to De la Gardie , 1931) both living and dead people were included, but after that only those who had already died. The originally commercial publishing product was taken over by the state in 1962. The current work plan ends with Volume 38, which is due to appear in 2021. The SBL and the Svenska Akademiens ordbok are the largest reference works in Scandinavia .

Since January 1st, 2009, the SBL has been an independent part of the Riksarkivet in Stockholm .
