The De la Gardie are a Swedish noble family of French descent that has been a count since 1625 , who rose to the highest nobility and state offices in the 17th century and decisively shaped Sweden.

origin

The de la Gardie go back to Jacques d'Escouperie, Seigneur de Russol De la Gardie , and his wife Catherine de Sainte Colombe. Their son Pontus De la Gardie (1520–1585), Baron von Ekholmen, married Sofia Gyllenhielm (1556–1583), an illegitimate daughter of King John III , in 1580 . of Sweden who died in childbed.

They had three children, Brita, Johan and Jakob. The daughter Brita married the Swedish statesman Gabriel Oxenstierna . Johan married Katarina Kristersdotter Oxenstierna, daughter of the Reichsrat Krister Gabrielsson Oxenstierna. Jakob married Ebba Magnusdotter Brahe ; the son of the two, Magnus , married the sister of King Charles X in 1647 , became a favorite of Queen Christina and the famous Reichsdrost and Chancellor of Sweden. He married Katarina Kristersdotter Oxenstierna († 1625), daughter of the Reichsrat Krister Gabrielsson Oxenstierna and Beata Karlsdotter Gera.

The De la Gardie's family records are scattered. A significant part is in the Lund University Library ( Delagardiska Archivet , edited by Wieselgren, 20 vols., Stockholm and Lund 1831–44). The correspondence and files of Magnus Gabriel are mainly kept in the Imperial Archives in Stockholm. The correspondence between Pontus and Jakob lies mainly in the Dorpat University Library .
