Life
Magnus Julius De la Gardie, a son of Axel Julius De la Gardie , started his military career in the French Army and fought with it in the War of the Spanish Succession . After the Battle of Malplaquet in 1709, he became a Swedish colonel in the Royal Dalarna Regiment , which he led in the Battle of Gadebusch in 1712. After the successful battle, he was appointed major general. In 1717 he was promoted to lieutenant general. As a result of the death of King Charles XII. Magnus Julius De la Gardie became a member of the Swedish Imperial Council . As a newly appointed member of the Imperial Council he commissioned architect Joseph Gabriel destain the Tullgarn castle to restore. In 1719 he was appointed President of the Board of Commerce . In 1727 he became a marshal .
Magnus Julius De la Gardie was a proven friend of France . When the Swedish Estates Council was constituted in 1734, it advocated close ties between France and Sweden. Inspired by French models, he introduced political salons in Sweden, a novelty in Sweden at the time. It is believed that the Party of Hats formed at one of these institutions.
He was married to Hedvig Catharina De la Gardie (1695-1745) and was the father of Eva Ekeblad and Hedvig Catharina von Fersen . Magnus Julius De la Gardie was the owner of Eksjöhovgård Castle , which he had rebuilt in the 1730s. He died in Stockholm in 1741.
