Eksjöhovgård castle ruins

The castle ruin Eksjöhovgård is located on the lake Eksjöhovgårdssjö near Sävsjö in Sweden . The ruin stands on an island in the northern part of the lake. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge to the northern shore of the lake.

history

A first written mention of the area comes from the year 1287. In the 14th century the Thing met here as a local court. From 1420 to 1616 the resulting farm belonged to the Sture family . According to a letter from 1505, a building already existed in the area of today's ruin at that time.

After the Sture family, Field Marshal Carl Mauritz Lewenhaupt received the court from the king for his services. Lewenhaupt had the estate expanded and built a three-story stone house. A map from 1685 shows the island including the stone house. In 1700 Fabian Wrede bought the property. The protocol prepared for this shows a three-story stone house at the far end of the island.

Magnus Julius De la Gardie later became the owner. In the 1730s he had the top floor demolished and relocated the entrance. In 1765 the Frederiksberg company took over the property. The company was dissolved in 1809. The castle fell into disrepair around 1805, and in 1812 the copper roof of the house was sold and removed. For a long time the ruin was left to decay. A restoration took place in 1934. Further restorations took place in the 1960s and 1980s.
