Count Carl Mauritz Lewenhaupt ( Swedish Carl Mauritz Leijonhufvud, greve till Raseborg och Falkenstein, formerly till Vinberg och Reipoltzkirchen ; born May 15, 1620 in Vinäs; † December 12, 1666 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish councilor and field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Carl Mauritz was a member of the Swedish Count Lewenhaupt ( Swedish Greve Leijonhufvud ). He was a son of the Swedish general Johan Casimir Lewenhaupt (1583-1634) and Sidonia Mauritzdotter, nee Freiin Grip (1585-1652). The Swedish field marshal and imperial councilor Gustaf Adolph Lewenhaupt (1619–1656) and the Swedish cavalry general , imperial and war councilor Ludvig Wierich Lewenhaupt (1622–1668) were his brothers.

He married Dorotea Wrangel (1627-1654) in 1646 and entered into a second marriage in 1657 in Wismar with Anna Maria Cruus von Edeby (1642-1716). The second marriage resulted in eight children, including:

  • Anna Catharina Lewenhaupt (1661–1740), ⚭ 1686 Gustaf Fredrik Lewenhaupt (1658–1723), Swedish lieutenant general

Career

Lewenhaupt studied in Uppsala in 1635 and in Leiden in 1638 . In 1644 he was already on horseback as a cavalry captain in the personal company and in 1645 became a colonel over the Swedish and Finnish aristocratic flags. In 1646 he led a German horse regiment within the Swedish army as a colonel in the German theater of war . In 1651 he was promoted to major general of the cavalry and in 1653 to imperial council, and in 1654 to council of war. In 1657 he was commander in chief of the troops in Värmland and was promoted to lieutenant general of the cavalry in 1658. Lewenhaupt was sent to Kalmar in 1659 to strengthen the defense of the city and in 1660 was given the command of an expedition to Norway . He was appointed Governor General of Finland in 1664 , but resigned from that position shortly thereafter. In 1665 he finally became Field Marshal and President of the War College.

Lewenhaupt was Count zu Raseborg and Falkenstein with Bretzenheim , Freiherr zu Vinberg and Reipoltskirchen , and heir to Tolsburg in Estonia . He also owned numerous estates in Sweden (such as Tjolöholm Castle and Eksjöhovgård Castle ) and Finland. He died after a three-day illness and was buried on December 4, 1667 in a gold-adorned lead coffin with an image of Christ in the Riddarholmskyrkan in Stockholm.
