Tjolöholm Castle

Tjolöholm Castle ( Swedish Tjolöholms slott ) is located near Kungsbacka in Sweden on the Kungsbackafjord. The present castle was built in Tudor style between 1898 and 1904 according to the plans of the architect Lars Israel Wahlman . There is a castle park around the castle, which is criss-crossed by hiking trails and extends to the Kungsbackafjord. The castle can be visited during the summer months. It has been classified as Byggnadsminne since 1935 .

Tjolöholm was first mentioned in 1231, then still written Thiulfö, and belonged to King Waldemar II of Denmark . In 1659 it was bought by the Swedish field marshal Carl Mauritz Lewenhaupt . In the following time the castle was resold several times and finally acquired in 1892 by the stable master JF Dickson. He had the old building torn down and the current building erected. In 1960 the city of Gothenburg bought the entire property and opened the castle to the public. Since then, more than 200,000 visitors have visited the castle every year. Since 1988 a Christmas market has been set up in front of the castle during the Christmas season and Advent concerts take place in the castle church .

In 2010 served the castle as a film set for the film Melancholia of Danish director Lars von Trier .
