Gustaf Adolph Lewenhaupt

Gustaf Adolph Lewenhaupt (Leijonhufvud) (born March 24, 1616 near Vinäs ; † November 29, 1656 ) was Count of Raseborg (Rasburg) and Falkenstein , Baron of Reipoltskirchen , Käggleholm and Vinberg in the province of Halland as well as Swedish Imperial Councilor and Field Marshal. He owned numerous estates and was lord of Graefsnäs, Bretzenheim in the Palatinate, Sagnitz in Lithuania and Himmelspfort near Bremen, Hässelbyholm in the Fogdö district.

Life

His parents were Johann Kasimir Lewenhaupt (1583-1634) and the baroness Sidonia Grip . Field Marshal Carl Mauritz Lewenhaupt (* 1620) was his brother.

He enrolled at Uppsala University on May 28, 1635 , but went to Leiden University on October 27, 1637 . At the beginning of 1637 he came to the regiment of Count Solms as a volunteer in Holland. In 1642 he became captain of the life guards of Field Marshal Lennart Torstensson . In the Battle of Breitenfeld (1642) he was wounded 17 times, the older officers of the regiment were killed and he was carried off the battlefield seriously injured. In 1643 he was appointed lieutenant colonel and commander of the Finnish regiments and in 1644 also a colonel.

In 1645 he was appointed major general and took part in the campaigns of Field Marshal Carl Gustav Wrangel . In 1647 he became commandant of Nienburg an der Weser and commander of the troops in Westphalia. He was also promoted to Lieutenant General of the Infantry on October 25, 1647. In 1649 he became a general of the Finnish militia as well as an Imperial and War Council.

In 1655 he was appointed field marshal and in 1656 came to Livonia as vice governor . In the Second Northern War he rumbled 1656 on July 1, Daugavpils and took the Lithuanian generals Kemetenowsky caught with his troops. He was transferred to Finland, where he was able to push the Russians back at Kexholm and Nyen .

But he died on November 29, 1656 in Rautus after being sick for eleven days. His body was brought to Stockholm and buried in Riddarholmskyrkan on July 19, 1657 .

In 1648 he married Countess Kristina Katarina De la Gardie (1632–1704), daughter of Jakob De la Gardie and Countess Elba Brake. The couple had several children:

The widow married Lieutenant General Gustaf Otto Stenbock . This Lewenhaupt line ended with his grandson, Lieutenant Colonel Carl Gustavson († 1711) in Moscow.
