Hats

Hattarne ( The Hats ) was a party of the Swedish nobility after the death of Charles XII. († 1718). The other party was called the "Mützen" ( Mössorna ). Since the kings Friedrich I (r. 1720–1751) and Adolf Friedrich (r. 1751–1771) had little political influence, the two parties regularly fought at the Reichstag for rule in which they alternated.

Domestically, both had the goal of further disempowering the kingship and establishing an oligarchy . In terms of foreign policy, the hats under the leadership of Arvid Horn kept with Russia, the hats under the Gyllenborgs with France, which they regularly incited to war against Russia. It was not until Gustav III. put an end to this aristocratic rule during his reign from 1771 to 1792.
