Axel Julius De la Gardie (baptized February 12 . Jul / 22. February  1637 greg. In Stockholm , † May 7. . Jul / 18th May  1710 . Greg ) was a Swedish military and statesman.

Life

Axel Julius De la Gardie was born as the youngest son of the Swedish military and politician Jakob De la Gardie (1583-1652) and his wife Ebba Magnusdotter Brahe (1596-1674). His grandfather Pontus De la Gardie (1520–1585) was a French military leader who had entered Swedish service and married the Swedish Countess Sophie Johannsdotter Gyllenhielm .

Count Axel Julius De la Gardie quickly made a career in the Swedish military. In 1656 he became a major in the royal bodyguard . In September 1660 he was appointed colonel of the Västgöta regiment on horseback. In 1664 he was major general of the cavalry and colonel of the royal bodyguard.

From 1674 Axel Julius De la Gardie held the rank of Swedish Imperial Councilor and one year later he became Lieutenant Field Marshal . In 1676 he was given the command of the troops in Finland and Ingermanland in order to organize the defense against a possible Russian attack. In 1677 De la Gardie took over the defense against Danish Norway in Jämtland and Bergslagen .

From 1687 to 1704 he was Governor General of Estonia . He favored the local Baltic German nobility. With the beginning of the Great Northern War in 1700 he organized the Swedish troops in the country against the tsarist army under Peter I. In 1704 he was ordered back to Sweden after failures. However, he retained his place in the Reichsrat.

Private life

Axel Julius De la Gardie was married from 1664 to the baroness Sofia Juliana Forbus (1649–1701), a daughter of the Swedish general and councilor Arvid Forbus (1598–1665). The couple had three sons:

1. Adam Carl De la Gardie (1664–1721)
2. Magnus Julius De la Gardie (1668–1741)
3. Pontus Fredrik De la Gardie (1669–1717)
