Pontus de la Gardie , Freiherr von Ekholmen, (* 1520 in Caunes-Minervois , Languedoc ; † November 5, 1585 drowned in the Narva River ) was a Swedish military leader and governor of Livonia .

Pontus De la Gardie was born at Russol Castle in France and was the progenitor of the Swedish aristocratic family De la Gardie . He fought first under the Comte de Brissac in Italy , then in 1557 in the battle of Saint-Quentin in France and Scotland at the time of Maria Stuart . He later went to Denmark and was in the Swedish service from 1565. He conquered the Baltic provinces of Estonia for Sweden and Ingermanland by 1581 in the fight against Russia .

Pontus married on February 4, 1580 in the castle of Vadstena Sofia Gyllenhielm , a biological daughter of King John III. of Sweden . She died giving birth to her third child.

In 1583 he was the Swedish negotiator for the Treaty of Pljussa .

Pontus de la Gardie and his wife are buried in Tallinn Cathedral .
