Sofia Gyllenhielm

Sofia Elisabeth Johansdotter Gyllenhielm (* 1556 or 1559 - † June 1, 1583 in Tallinn , dates uncertain) was the illegitimate daughter of the Swedish King Johann III. and his mistress Katarina Hansdotter (1539–1596).

Life

Sofia was initially a chambermaid at her father's court. Together with her two siblings Julius Johansson (1560–1581) and Lucretia Johansdotter (1562–1585), she was ennobled by her father in 1577 and was given the name Gyllenhielm.

On February 4th, 1580 Sofia Gyllenhielm married the Swedish general Pontus De la Gardie in the church of the castle of Vadstena .

Sofia Gyllenhielm died in the summer of 1583 in the postpartum period . Like her husband, she is buried in Tallinn Cathedral.
