Vadstena Castle is a Swedish Renaissance castle from the 16th century. Vadstena Castle is located on Lake Vättern in the city of Vadstena in the Swedish province of Östergötland .

Vadstena Castle was built between 1545 and 1620 by order of Gustav Wasa . It is a quadrangular fortress, on one side of which stands the three-story main building with a strong central tower, while the three other sides were formed by ramparts. There are round corner bastions in the corners, and the entire complex is surrounded by a moat filled with water.

The castle was also used as a royal residence and under Johan III. splendidly furnished. However, the facility was destroyed in a fire in 1598, and Vadstena Castle was abandoned as a royal castle at the beginning of the 18th century. After that the castle was used as a grain store and factory building. In 1895 the Christian Student World Federation (WSCF) was founded at Vadstena Castle.

In 1899 a state archive was moved to the castle, which is still there today, and the castle was restored in stages in the 20th century. Since 1935 it has been registered as Byggnadsminne .

Vadstena Castle is one of the best preserved Wasaburgs (together with Gripsholm Castle and Kalmar Castle ) and is the “real” Renaissance castle in Sweden.
