Johan Pontusson De la Gardie (born March 3, 1582 in Reval , † March 10, 1642 at Steninge Castle , Sweden ) was a Swedish nobleman and holder of the highest state offices.

His parents were the Swedish military leader and governor of Livonia , Pontus De la Gardie , and his wife Sofia Gyllenhielm , illegitimate daughter of King John III. of Sweden .

career

When Per Brahe fell ill during the session of the Estates' Congress in 1630, King Gustav II appointed Adolf De la Gardie as Land Marshal , who then headed the last part of the Reichstag session of that year. From 1631 to 1638 he was one of the directors of the knight house in Stockholm. In 1633 he was appointed to the Imperial Council and in 1634 he also became assessor in the Swedish Court Council.

De la Gardie died in 1642 at Steninge Castle near Märsta in Uppland and was buried in the church of Veckholm in Enköping parish.

Marriages and offspring

Johan De la Gardie married Katarina Kristersdotter Oxenstierna († 1625), daughter of the Imperial Councilor Krister Gabrielsson Oxenstierna and Beata Karlsdotter Gera. The marriage had three daughters:

In 1640 he married the future chief stewardess of the queen widow Maria Eleonora , Görvel Posse (1600–1671).
