Oxenstierna
Oxenstierna (Swedish pronunciation: ʊksɛnˌɧæːɳa) is the name of an old Swedish noble family from Småland . The progenitor is Nils in Långserum , whose son Gjurd Nilsson († around 1312) had an ox forehead in his shield. The family name, which was adopted before 1500, is derived from this coat of arms.
history
Several members of the family became regents under the Kalmar Union . The most important was Axel Oxenstierna , who from 1612 until his death in 1654 as Swedish Chancellor, first under King Gustav Adolf , after his death in 1632 then as the guardian of his underage daughter Christina . He reformed the Swedish administration, enforced territorial gains against Denmark and Germany in the Thirty Years War and secured Sweden's position as a great power in the Baltic Sea region.
