Baron Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna , since 1651 Count on Korsholm and Vasa ( Swedish friherre Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna af Eka och Lindö, Greve av Korsholm och Vasa ; born June 7, jul. / 17th June  1586 greg. In Lindholmen , † December 2 July / December 12,  1656 greg. in Edsberg ) was a Swedish statesman .

Life

Origin and family

Gabriel was a member of the Barons Oxenstierna af Eka och Lindö . His parents were Bengt Gabrielsson Oxenstierna († 1591) and Sigrid Gustafsdotter, (nee Tre Rosor). He married Anna Gustafsdotter Banér (1585–1656) in 1610. The marriage had 11 children, including:

Career

Oxenstierna was a chamberlain at the court of Charles IX in 1606 . He was governor of Estonia from 1611 to 1617 and took part in the Kalmar War. In 1617 he was appointed Reichsrat and Reichsfeldzeugmeister and in 1627 he was appointed Lagman in Värmland . From 1631 to 1634 he was Governor General in Finland and from 1634 to 1652 Imperial Treasurer. In the meantime, from 1645 to 1647 he was governor general in Swedish Livonia and in 1646 had a beacon built for the first time on the southern tip of Oesel . Eventually he became Imperial Admiral in 1652 , which he remained until 1656.

Oxenstierna was the first count of Korsholm and Vasa in Österbotten since 1651 and had extensive other land holdings. In 1626 and 1630 he became the owner of Aya , Wendohof, Altenturm and Klein-Caster in Livonia. He had already received the Livonian goods Cremon and Engelhardshof in 1625, and Serbigall was added in 1634. The Swedish estates Edsberg and Moholm came into his possession little after 1630 and 1636 respectively. Between 1634 and 1638 he had Rosersberg Castle built for himself.
