Count ( Swedish Greve ) Johan Axelsson Oxenstierna af Södermöre (born June 24, 1611 in Stockholm , † December 5, 1657 in Wismar ) was a Swedish statesman.

origin

His parents were the Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (1583-1654) and his wife Anna Åkesdotter (Bååt) . The later Chancellor Erik Axelsson Oxenstierna (1624–1656) was his brother.

Life

After completing his studies in Uppsala , he was introduced to statesmanship by the Chancellor himself, his father, while he was in Prussia in 1629. In 1631 he was sent on study trips to the Netherlands , England and France on the recommendation of his father and provided with his instructions . After his return Oxenstierna did his military service in Germany with his brother Gustav Horn and was 1632 Colonel of the Red Regiment (Swed. Swedish Röda regementet ).

From this time Oxenstierna and his father Axel became active in diplomatic matters, whereby the son received detailed instructions from the father and can rather be seen as his vicarious agent.

In 1635 he was appointed chamber councilor and thereby became a part of the influence of the Reich Chancellor on the financial administration. Against his father's will, he was appointed to the council in 1639 and thus became Reich Chancellor Council. Since the Chancellor himself could not take part in the great peace congress in Germany, Oxenstierna was sent there in 1641, on an equal footing with the legate Johan Adler Salvius , but he received his instructions from his father. Although he had problems with his colleague and Queen Christina was more positive about him, Oxenstierna stayed until the peace treaty in 1648. After that, he was sent to Pomerania in 1650 to organize the new administration.

Shortly before his brother Erik Oxenstierna was recalled from Livonia , Johan was also recalled due to the regained trust of the royal family. In 1653 Oxenstierna became head of the law in Uppland and when Charles X Gustav, who was friendly towards the Oxenstiernas, was ascended to the throne, he became Reichsmarschall. In the same year he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Greifswald and in 1655 Sweden's legacy in Germany.

family

He married Countess Anna Sture (1614–1646) in Stockholm on June 24, 1636 . After the death of his first wife, he married on July 3, 1648 in Wismar Margareta Brahe (* June 28, 1603, † May 15, 1669).
