Tullgarn Castle

The Tullgarn castle is a royal castle in Sweden and is located in the municipality of Södertälje near the town Trosa .

The original castle was built at the end of the 16th century under Count Karl Sture. In the middle of the 17th century it consisted of a larger main building with three floors and two round and one square tower. On the side of the main building there were two wings, which in turn were joined by another building, creating a courtyard.

The first owner known today was the knight and imperial councilor Tord Röriksson Bonde. The castle was given its current appearance during an extensive restoration between 1719 and 1727 on behalf of Count Magnus Julius De la Gardie. The architect was Joseph Gabriel Destain. The castle now consists of a 43-meter-long and 15-meter-wide main building with two 8-meter-wide wings that form an open courtyard to the water of a Baltic Sea bay.

What is striking today is the classicist furnishings that came into the palace in the late 18th century when Prince Fredrik Adolf (the youngest brother of Gustav III ) owned the palace. King Gustav V and his wife Viktoria von Baden used Tullgarn as a summer residence .

Today the castle is open to the public and is maintained by the state building administration. Since 1935 it has been under state protection as Byggnadsminne . There are various dining options, guided tours, as well as a souvenir shop and an orangery .
