Marie Euphrosine of Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg
Marie Euphrosine von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (born February 14, 1625 in Stegeborg Castle ; † October 24, 1687 in Höjentorp ) was a Countess Palatinate of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg and by marriage Countess De la Gardie.
Life
Marie Euphrosine was a daughter of Count Palatine Johann Kasimir von Zweibrücken-Kleeburg (1589–1652) from his marriage to Princess Katharina Wasa of Sweden (1584–1638), daughter of King Karl IX. of Sweden . Her brother became King of Sweden in 1654 as Charles X Gustav . Euphrosine was brought up together with the future Queen of Sweden, Christine .
She married on March 7, 1647 in Stockholm the future Swedish Chancellor Count Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie (1622-1686). Marie Euphrosine stuck to her mother tongue. The children were raised Lutheran and bilingual. The Countess wrote the letters to her husband in German until the end of her life. After her brother's accession to the throne, Marie Euphrosine received the rank of royal princess; she never held the title of countess. In 1682 a large part of De la Gardie's estates was confiscated by the Swedish king, which plunged the family into deep poverty.
Marie Euphrosine is buried in Varnhem , in the funerary chapel of the De la Gardie family , at her husband's side. The tomb is decorated with half-length portraits of the couple made of alabaster.
