Anna Maria von der Pfalz (born July 24, 1561 in Heidelberg , † July 29, 1589 in Eskilstuna ) was a Countess Palatine of Simmern and Princess of the Palatinate and, by marriage, a Swedish princess .

Life

Anna Maria was the eldest daughter of Elector Ludwig VI. von der Pfalz (1539–1583) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1539–1582), daughter of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse .

During a visit to her father, Duke Karl von Södermanland , who would later become King Charles IX of Sweden, asked for the 15-year-old princess. He had traveled to Germany in 1577 to look for a suitable bride among the Protestant princely daughters. The wedding took place in Heidelberg on May 11, 1579.

Anna Maria was described as always ailing and with a weak constitution. Their marriage was considered extremely happy and Karl was very attached to his Calvinist wife, which gave him a reputation among the Swedish clergy to be close to this religion. A surviving portrait of her (in the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg) shows a petite young woman of 18 years with brunette hair. She was considered mild and godly. She always succeeded in soothing her husband's hot temper.

The princess was buried in Strängnäs Cathedral.

progeny

From her marriage to Karl, she had two sons and four daughters, of whom only one daughter reached adulthood:

  • Margareta Elisabeth (1580–1585)
  • Elisabeth Sabina (1582–1585)
